Volunteering is one of the best ways to support and contribute to the festival. Fringe volunteers share a passion for the festival, theatre, and the performing arts. Make new friends, help put on a world class theatre festival, and enjoy the show!
WHAT WILL I DO as a volunteer?
Our volunteers carry out a wide variety of tasks using a wide spectrum of physical, technical and interpersonal skills. Volunteers are placed on a first-come first-served basis considering preferences as well as skills, interests and qualifications for individual crews.
The more choices you offer the better. Some crews may attract more volunteers and fill up quickly, so please be flexible and do not be discouraged. We will make every effort to find the best fit for each volunteer and we promise to strive to make each volunteer experience enjoyable!
Volunteering for Fringe Festivals is an experience like no other! To help make all our events possible, we need dedicated, selfless, behind-the-scenes performers—to fill a variety of volunteer roles. Volunteers run our Box Offices and work as Ushers at all of our venues and events, and fill various other positions during our annual summer Festival. Being a volunteer gives you the satisfaction of knowing that, thanks to your tireless efforts, independent artists will continue to have the opportunity to perform, act, speak, and screen their work!

Ushers
are responsible for the patron’s experience. You will open the doors to the house and collect tickets as patrons enter into the theatre. You will “watch the house” during each performance to assist patrons as needed. You will also assist the Venue Manger with other duties such as keeping the venue tidy and handing out surveys.Box Office
is where patrons come to purchase tickets for the next performance. You will be responsible for selling tickets. The box office opens 45 minutes before each performance. Once the show house goes in you are responsible for the balancing of the cash and tickets. Runner Grab your sneakers! You and another volunteer will walk between venues supplying each venue with materials, including small bills and change for the box office. You will also be tasked with the pickup of signed reconciliation forms and completed surveys.Volunteer to the Rescue!
Fills in for volunteers who can’t make their shift or jumps in to help when things get busy. You must be flexible, adventurous, and ready to save the day!

Street festival volunteers
are responsible for assisting the Street Festival Coordinator and participants with setting up, maintaining, and tearing down events and booths, as well as providing security, answering patrons’ questions, and provide a Fringe presence on the street, help to divert traffic and keep the crowd orderly in between show schedules.Venue managers
are volunteers with strong leadership skills who have volunteered with theatre companies and productions in the past. The Venue Manger is primarily responsible for ensuring the venue runs smoothly and the patrons have a great experience. They connect with the artist and technician and make sure all shows start on time. The Venue Manger will review the box office reconciliation with the artist post performance and ensure proper payout is conducted.Beer Tent volunteers
pour beer, sell tickets, and assist with the overall operations. Volunteers in the Beer Tent must have their SmartServe, which can be obtained on-line through the LCBO.
Children’s Fringe volunteers
are caring, fun, and creative and share a love for children. The children’s fringe is free. Fringe North has modelled its Children’s Fringe upon the wonderful children’s activities and events at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and the Edmonton Fringe, but will be uniquely its own with a Sault Ste. Marie flair. These two internationally acclaimed festivals are loved by children of all ages because they combine fun, education, physical activity, theater and music, arts and crafts, street performers. Volunteers at the Children’s Fringe are required to obtain a Vulnerable Persons report from their local Police Services. Why you should volunteer with the Fringe!
Being a volunteer gives you satisfaction of knowing that, thanks to your tireless efforts, independent artists will have the opportunity to perform, act, speak, and screen their work. Volunteers will receive a Fringe T-Shirt, a Fringe Button, and an invitation to the Fringe wrap party on the final Saturday night of the festival. The success of Fringe North relies on volunteers. We greatly appreciate your time, energy, enthusiasm and support. We couldn’t do without you.
